We once went to Manzone's estate with a friend who said they did not like red wine. They tasted La Marchesa. Now, they're a convert.
I'm a nerd, I want every detail
An elegant and powerful red wine whose name echoes a farmhouse that has been in the Manzone family for nearly thirty years. Winemaker Mauro Manzone is the latest glimmering example of his family's talent for making wines that we think are among the best, if not the best, in the world — and done with the utmost modesty. This vintage is particularly good: on the nose, intense notes of cherry, blackberry, and tobacco give way to a finish of exceptional length.
The Craft
- Hand-harvested at optimal ripeness.
- Whole berries.
- Soft pumping-over for 15 days.
- Aged 20-24 months in French casks.
- 14.5% ABV.
- Lifespan: up to 15-20 years.
The Occasion
La Marchesa is a wine made for the table: generous enough for a grand occasion, yet equally suited to the simple pleasure of an eggplant parmigiana or a perfectly cooked beef tenderloin.
Mauro Manzone
Oenologist Mauro Manzone was, quite literally, born under the sign of the vine. In 1985, his mother Rita was mid-harvest, picking Nebbiolo, when her contractions began. The harvest stopped — and resumed only weeks later. The weather, as it turned out, had been kind, and the season ended with two causes for celebration: the arrival of Mauro, and the bottling of one of the finest vintages of the decade. He is now the winemaker behind Manzone's distinct identity in the Langhe.
