Malvazija (pronounced mahl-vah-zee-ah) is a skin-contact wine, meaning the crushed grapes fermented with their skins, giving it its deep amber colour. It's as complex and mysterious as Klimt's red-haired portraits: seductive, with a hint of danger.

Malvazija is one of the most common grapes in Slovenia, but here it comes with a twist: a skin-contact fermentation that gives this vintage a rich nose of dried fruit and a distinct, elegant bitterness. It's a good example of a wine that surprised us because the nose and the palate are so different — from apricot, pear, and quince, to a dry, refreshing finish. Definitely worth a second glass. 

 

The craft

 

  • 3 to 5-day skin maceration.

  • 13% ABV.

  • Lifespan: up to 8 years.

 

The occasion

 

Perfect as an apéritif on its own, but we also love it with a carrot purée or a poached pear with almonds.

The winemaker

SANdra and MaTEI created SANTEI. Two wine-loving free thinkers, who gave up their careers in multinational corporations to pursue their dream and become wine growers/makers. Once they settled in a small farm close to the Italian border, ideas started flowing and an ambitious vision materialized: to farm their unique terroir with total respect for nature in order to develop organic, natural and unforgettable wine experiences. Why take such a big step if it's not to do the best you can.  The hard work began without attending any class, just relentless experimentation - no shortcut, no quick fixes, just making original wines that they can stand fully behind. Such a combination of hard work and talent rarely fails. Then they added spirits. Santei wines and spirits is a labor of love.
